Back Country Avalanche
Forecasting and Rescue Course

This is you first step to climb the ladder to
becoming an Avalanche Professional. This is great for those
who want to have a good fundamental understanding of the workings of an
Avalanche, How to forecast them, and do an Avalanche Rescue.
You will learn many new terms, increase you knowledge and vocabulary too. This is a
10 hour avalanche awareness training course. At the completion of
this course you will have a fundamental understanding of the Avalanche
Phenomena. You will learn how 100's of tons of snow can start
sliding with just your foot steps. You will learn techniques and
principles associated with forecasting the probability of an avalanche
running down a certain slope. Terms like: Depth Hoar, Hoar Frost,
Equi-temperature, Temperature Gradient (T.G.), Sugar snow, Snow Pits,
Brackets, Slab Avalanche, Point Release or Loose snow Avalanche, Flux
lines, Probes, will become part of your vocabulary. Learn how to
travel cross a suspect slope, use avalanche beacons, and what to do if
you don't have a beacon.
You will receive you Avalanche Awareness Certification: Those
who successfully pass the practical and written exams will receive their
“Awareness” Training Certification in Avalanche Forecasting and Rescue.
*Required Equipment (You receive a
discount from the day of registration to the end of the class (rentals available): Clothing
appropriate for winter travel (including Back country Skis or Snow Shoes,
are required. Note: Ski poles recommended when using snow shoes), a day pack
for extra cloths, food and water for the in the field session.
Time of Training: Friday Night
Class begins at 19:00 (7:00pm) and
ends about 22:00 hrs (10:00 pm)
Location: Friday night class will
be held at The High Angle Training Center, 72 West
500 North, Orem, Utah, USA. We will give you the location for
Saturdays class, assist in arranging car pools, and go over details of
Saturday.

materials, and the use of group climbing gear, testing materials and
certificates. Each participant is asked to bring any extra avalanche
beacons, shovels, or probes, to help outfit those who have not been able to
purchase them yet.
At the successful
completion of the written test and the practical field sections the
participant will receive a B.C. Avalanche Awareness Certificate and wallet
certification card. More importantly, you will have a good fundamental
understanding of a force that doesn't care whether it kills you or not, but
you have the upper hand now! Apply the training, with the proper
equipment, and good judgment and you will be reasonably safe! |
 Slab
avalanches (above and below) are generally the
most dangerous type of avalanche. Victims have approximately a 20%
mortality rate for just being caught. If you are found within 30
minutes you have about a 50-50 chance of being alive, in 60 minutes,
about a 20% chance, . . .

This is a 5 day course, including 3 evenings, is
designed to start at ground level, to Awareness Level, to the First Level of
Professional High Angle Rescue Technician #1, this includes:
Awareness Training and Certification: Those
who successfully pass the practical and written exams will receive their
“Awareness” Training Certification in High Angle Rescue. This is a
fundamental understanding of what is involved in a “High Angle Rescue
(H.A.R.)” the Hazards Associated with a H.A.R., and a Fundamental
understanding of the equipment used in H.A.R. Operations.
Operational Training and Certification as a High
Angle Rescue Technician #1: Those who successfully pass the
practical and written exams will receive their "Operational" training
Certification (Wall certificate and laminated wallet
Certification I.D.)
(1). Personal Vertical Survival Skills these are needed to be able
to assess their personal safety situation, safely move into the vertical
environment, assist with the rescue, and then safely exit rescue
environment. These include: Personal Safety and
High Angle Safety, High Risk Survival Training, and Risk Evaluation
Training, Knots, Single Person Belays, Ascending fixed Ropes and Basic
Climbing Skills, Rappelling, Fundamental Anchoring and Rigging, .
(2). Professional Vertical Rescue Skills these are
the skills needed to assist with basic emergency care, packaging, and
transportation - extrication of the victim from the high angle environment
to safety. These include: Heavy anchoring and
Rescue Rigging, Lowering systems, Raising systems, Rescue Belays systems,
Basic Patient Assessment, Litter Rigging, Attendant Rigging, and
Patient Tie-ins.
*Required Equipment (You receive a
discount on the day of the class (rentals available): Clothing
appropriate for the time of year, day pack, food and water for each
day, and personal harness, belay and rappel device, rope handling gloves,
ascending system, 2, six foot slings of 1" Tub. Webbing, 3, locking
carabiners.
Time and Location of Training: Starts at 08:30 and
end about 17:00 hrs each day. Classes held at The Training Center, 72 West
500 North, Orem, Utah, USA.

High Angle Rescue Professionals Learning and Practicing their
Rope Ascending Skills In a Condensed High Angle Rescue Technician #1 Cours |
This is the first step into the Professional field of Rope Rescue.
Vertical Skills: fundamental anchoring, rappelling,
belaying, ascending, knots, safety, etc.) and then move onto the
professional rope rescue skills: (belaying the rescue load, multi anchor
management, lowering, raising, litter rigging, etc.). Upon Successful
completion of the course (written test, and instructor evaluation) you will
earn your High Angle Rescue Technician #1 Condensed Course
Certificate.
*Required Equipment (rentals available): Clothing appropriate for the
time of year, large day pack, food and water for each day, and personal
climbing/safety gear.
